Resume

Mattia Della Rocca, PhD

Personal Profile

Researcher, educator, and communicator, born in Rome in 1984 and raised as a 21st-century European citizen.

My academic interests lead me to explore the dynamic intersections between diverse minds and complex environments, through the lens of history and philosophy.

Equally passionate about teaching and research, I view them as complementary facets of the same pursuit.

I am committed to enhancing these roles with effective communication that is ethical, critical, and inclusive.

Academic Interests

(with a selection of related classes I teach or I’ve taught)

Minds and Brains

General Psychology: History, Theory, Models (2018 to date) — Graduate School of Psychotherapy Bios Psyché

  • More than a simple introduction to psychology and its history, this class aims to provide future psychotherapists and psychiatrists with the state of the art of theoretical psychology, hand in hand with a critical knowledge of the past of the discipline.

The Environment(s)

Food, Nutrition and Culture (2021 to date) — Council on International Educational Exchange

  • Food is all about life, science – and of course, it’s all about relationships and culture. In this course for American students, we explore the entanglement between all these aspects of nutrition and cuisine (and as you can guess, we have lots of tasting on-site activities).

Social Psychology (2020 to date) — Council on International Educational Exchange

  • There’s nothing better than psychology to scientifically understand the human being, but nothing compares to social psychology, when it comes to navigate the complex facets of culture and society.

Psychology of Digital Environments (2019 to date) — University of Rome Tor Vergata

  • The first course in an Italian public university offering classes, lectures and research activities on all psychological aspects of digital life and human-AI interaction.

Environmental Psychology / Global Change and the Environment / Global Environmental Policy (2023 to date) — Council on International Educational Exchange

  • The environment is way more than a scientific issue: it is literally everything that matters for any organism – and this is even more true for one species, humankind. So, if we want to protect it, we have to study all scientific and cultural facets of the environmental discourse, including how politics and society see it. And that’s exactly what we do in these classes!

Dynamics and Instruments of Scientific Communication (2022 to date) — University of Rome Tor Vergata

  • Both a course and a workshop for Biology and Biotechnology students, meant to provide the concepts and the tools for properly communicating science and technology in the 21st century world.

Family Schools and Child Development (2021 to date) / Special Pedagogy and Didactics (2020 to date) — Council on International Educational Exchange / University of Rome Tor Vergata

  • Two courses for two different institutions, each one different in the focus adopted, but sharing the same goal: understanding and handling the richness of diversity in educational environments, so to contribute to a better society inside and outside the classroom.

Science, Tech & Society — Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice

Research Topics

  • Technoscience and society in the 20th and the 21st century
  • The concept of environment
  • Humans, technologies, knowledge
  • Tiqqun ‘olam (fix the world)
  • History, philosophy, science — and don’t forget: a (kind, honest and fair) communication is paramount!

Some questions I often ask myself:

  • What is the environment?
  • We change the environment through technology, so how does technology change us?
  • What is the human mind, and how is it different from other minds?
  • How can we use what we know to make the world a better place?
